What Exactly Is Blepharoplasty and What Can It Do For You?

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is surgery that includes repairing droopy eyelids by removing excess skin, muscle, and fat. As they’re often the first point of contact you have with others, your eyes can make the natural aging process very visible. Excess fat and skin tissue can accumulate below your eyes as you age just as it can above your eyes, making you appear older than you feel and potentially obstructing your peripheral vision.

Fat pockets and sagging skin below your eyes, also referred to as bags, can make them appear droopy and tired. Besides making you look older, severely sagging skin around your eyes can impair your peripheral or side vision. Blepharoplasty can reduce or eliminate such impaired vision.

How is Blepharoplasty Performed?

Blepharoplasty is usually done on an outpatient basis. To help decide if blepharoplasty is right for you, find out what you can realistically expect, and take time to explore the benefits and risks of blepharoplasty. Blepharoplasty can be done with either a lower eyelid lift or an upper eyelid lift.

  • Lower Eyelid Lift – A lower eyelid lift is a very similar procedure to an upper eyelid lift, and it can be performed in conjunction with it if you have excess skin below your eyes in addition to above them. Your cosmetic surgeon will remove and/or reposition excess skin and fat beneath your eyes to restore their youthful appearance. The procedure is minimally invasive and performed in the office, requiring only the use a local numbing agent instead of general anesthesia.
  • Upper Eyelid Lift – An upper eyelid lift, is a minimally invasive procedure that can help you rejuvenate the appearance of your eyes. When you receive an upper eyelid lift, excess skin and surrounding tissue is removed from above your eyelids, improving the appearance and functionality of your eyes.
What Should You Expect With a Blepharoplasty Procedure?

After recovering from your lower/upper eyelid lift, you should expect that your eyes appear younger and refreshed. As with any cosmetic procedure, it is important that you know what to expect from a lower eyelid lift prior to having the procedure. The following are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • A lower/upper eyelid lift is minimally invasive and easily performed in the office. General anesthesia is not necessary for this procedure as it can be done with only local numbing medication while the patient is very comfortable.
  • This procedure typically takes between forty-five and ninety minutes to perform. Recovery times will vary, usually taking one week for bruising and swelling to subside, and two to three weeks before all activities can be fully resumed.
  • Variations of lower/upper eyelid lifts are performed based on individual anatomy and expectations.  Additional procedures may be performed to tighten the eyelids if excessive laxity is present.  Ask our doctors if that is applicable to your treatment plan.
